Compulsory Travel Insurance To Be Imposed Soon In Thailand

People who are travelling to Thailand for business or leisure must have travel insurance for Thailand for their own peace of mind while away from home. By taking travel insurance, you are essentially protecting yourself from risks like stolen luggage, unforeseen cancellation of flights and unexpected medical costs.

According to Bangkok Post, compulsory travel insurance will be enforced in Thailand this year. Travellers will be required to pay for a special policy through the immigration offices that can be found in airports. Proceeds from the compulsory travel insurance will go to Thailand’s Tourism Promotion Fund to cover payments in case there are claims.

According to the Thai Office of Insurance Commission, the policy will cost a traveller 20 baht (52p) for a month’s cover. Reports state that up to 1 million baht coverage will be provided in case of death. The Thai government hopes that the introduction of compulsory travel insurance will enhance greater confidence among travellers.

The idea of compulsory travel insurance was raised after the number of tragedies where foreign travellers were involved like the boat tragedy in Phuket where 47 Chinese tourists were killed. However, Nel Mooy, head of travel at AXA Insurance, it appears that tourists will only be covered in case of death and not when they are injured.

Mooy further said that medical expenses abroad can be very expensive for tourists. Recently, their company paid a British tourist £164, 000 in claims because of a road traffic accident in Thailand. Travellers are advised to have medical insurance if they plan to engage to activities like scuba diving and rafting.

Even with the new policy, insurers advise travellers to purchase their own insurance. For example, a tourist from the United Kingdom must purchase travel insurance in UK before travelling abroad to cover medical expenses and other costs associated to cancellations, delays, loss of luggage and other unforeseen circumstances.

Applicants for travel insurance for Thailand are considered regardless of their age or health status. Costs are competitive without compromising the quality of the coverage. There are many risks associated to travelling which can be mitigated if a traveller has insurance that is specifically tailored to his needs.
